Fierce women in ICT – Different roles in ICT sector

Have you ever thought that even though Estonia is known as the world's first digital nation, the employment of women in the local ICT sector is significantly lower than that of men?[1]

Both last year and the year before, we have introduced different roles in ICT and women in these roles. This year we will continue to do so.

We will discuss:

What are the different roles and career paths in the ICT sector?
What should you consider when planning a career in the ICT sector?
What are the specific roles of the sector and what are the cross-sectorial roles?
Do and how role models influence women's role choices in IT?

Speakers

Liina Freivald

As a Senior Program Manager at Microsoft Development Center Estonia, she works with a team of engineers who own Engineering Infrastructure - build, test, and release management in the continuous integration space. She has over 20 years of experience in project and program management, operational risk management, IT governance and customer relationship management in the technology and financial services industries.

Her mission is to use technology to support climate and biodiversity, and to build companies and organizations that share this vision. She is a cofounder and CEO of VAAL Airships, a startup that aims to revolutionize the space industry with sustainable and innovative airship technology. She is also involved with Estonian Greens, a political party that advocates for green policies and values. She is passionate about learning new skills, solving complex problems, and collaborating with diverse and talented people.

Agnes Roos

Agnes has a passion for IT that spans two decades. She started her career as an IT-business analyst at Hansabank, where she learned how to design and implement IT solutions that meet the various needs of business. She rose through the ranks and became the CIO of Eesti Energia, the largest company in Estonia. She believes that info-technology is an organic part of our daily life and that we need more people from different backgrounds and sectors who understand on large scale IT and strive for excellent and user-friendly IT solutions.

Liina Helstein

Liina has obtained a master's degree at the Estonian University of Life Sciences, and since 2016 she worked as a business relations specialist in Tartu Science Park, where, among other things, she successfully launched the activities of the SPARK Demo Center, gathered companies into a common contact network, and promoted the business environment in Tartu.

Liina is an active leader and contributor of activities aimed at women's entrepreneurship in the Tartu club of the Estonian Entrepreneurial Women's Association. Through her roots, she is also closely connected to the field of forestry and stands for the rights of private forest owners in the board of the Estonian Private Forestry Association in addition to the local cooperative.
