1/3 of Companies Ended 2010 in Loss

ERR - More than one in three of enterprises finished in the red in 2010, according to a senior statistician at Statistics Estonia.

Writing on the organization's blog, Reet Nestor said that the result is still better than the year prior, when only about half the companies managed to turn a profit. This marked a sharp contrast to the boom years of 2005 to 2007 when the percentage of loss-making companies was just 13.

Despite the drop in net profits during the 2008 to 2009 period, dividend payouts remained at the same level, as they can be paid on profits earned in previous years.

In 2010, dividend payments totaled 800 million euros, about a quarter of which went to owners of energy companies.
